Dysmorphia Utilizing stylized choreography and multimedia to explore identity and the price paid for seeking beauty at all costs Ground Cover Theatre presents Dysmorphia a dark and twisted Faustian morality tale, in which a lonely, delusional woman seeks to escape the drudgery of her life by having radical plastic surgery. She discovers that Beauty is a poisoned chalice and getting her old life comes at a price. With Directed by Natasha Martina Costume & Set Design by Carla Orosz September 3rd-12th (Preview Sept 2nd PWYC) supported by: An Act of Elusion AN ACT OF ELUSION is an empowerment piece. It is about how one man tries to avoid confronting his past. Jonathon Maheegin, a young recluse, can recall little about who he is. A mysterious visitor (Rob) antagonizes Jon and helps him in unconventional ways to confront his past. Rob is relentless in his pressure, sometimes becoming the demons of Jon’s past, to bring Jon out of his depression and launch him on a journey of self-discovery. October 22 - 25 & October 29 - Nov 1/09 supported by: Leaves of Glass "At times funny and moving,...intelligent, emotionally unsettling and intellectually stimulating." On the surface, Steven has everything. A beautiful wife, a successful business, a brand new home. But beneath the glittering veneer lies a monstrous secret . . . 'You believe him cos he wraps all the painful stuff in feathers and flowers. Makes it all safe and cosy. You can't feel the broken glass inside.' Leaves of Glass is a rich, complex play about two brothers and the hold that the past and memory has on them. Haunted by the death of his father and a car accident involving a young child, Steve finds his life unraveling and his pregnant wife unable to comprehend his pain and sense of loss. Known for his dark disturbing dramas, Ridley's latest play is a deeply human drama that shifts between elegy for the past and a chilling exploration of the power of loss and grief. January 14-17, 2010
Pocket Plays Sometimes death brings people together. Sometimes it makes them do something strange. Sometimes it shows who your loved ones really are. Whatever happens, it helps to have friends and brownies to pull you through. The talented ladies of 400 lbs of Sunshine have put their quirky little minds together to co-create three original short plays. These plays are pocket-sized, if you will, but have little or nothing to do with pockets. Ledge Coffee Pocket Plays explore how we cope with loss and find our voice through grief. Laugh, cry, deny, break down, lash out, run or hide. But have a brownie. It will help. Written and performed by Catherine Harrison, Amber McGrath Huck and Clare Middleton Directed by Sharon Bakker Running time: Aprox. 90 minutes A Sunshine Theatre Co-op. supported by: john & jen with mark oddan & jacklyn green A truly original story that takes a look at the complexities of relationships between brothers and sisters and parents and children, set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990, john & jen is a gem of a show brimming with intelligence, wit and beautiful melodies. BONUS SHOW! A Christmas Carol
A Christmas tradition returns to Saskatoon for the 15th year. Written in 1843, A CHRISTMAS CAROL has become the Christmas story and one of the most loved works in the English language. Few people know that Dickens also wrote and performed a solo theatrical version of his famous story for many years. Now you can experience the laughter, tears and joy of the original with John D. Huston as Charles Dickens at The Refinery December 1st. Huston's lovingly authentic reproduction of Dickens' performances, developed from Dickens' own script and working notes, hauntingly evokes the magic of a Christmas Past. His astonishing tour de force presentation has toured the country every year since 1991 playing to full houses and ecstatic reviews. This remarkable performance has been described as "mesmerizing", "powerful" and "Christmas magic" by reviewers and audiences from B.C. to Montreal. "Almost too perfect" Globe and Mail "You'll be haunted if you miss it." Sasktoon Star-Phoenix "Powerful one man theatre in the hands of a master storyteller." National Post "Huston is mesmerising."
